Coast Protected From Miami-Style Condo Boom
In 2024, multiple bills in the state legislature authored by Senator Scott Wiener and others, sought to remove the authority of the California Coastal Commission to hear appeals of bad housing projects that would harm our iconic coast.
If these bills had passed as originally drafted, they would have opened the floodgates for Big Real Estate to build huge condo and hotel towers that would block off the oceanfront and make the California coast look like Miami, while seriously endangering wildlife up and down the coast.

Our City joined Surfrider, and scores of other environmental groups in fighting these bills and together we won!
In 2025, we also helped stop a similar bill from Senator Wiener (SB 677). Due to overwhelming opposition Wiener's bill never made it out of committee.
